The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is celebrated every year on December 3rd. This day is extremely important because the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society is essential for the achievement of human rights, sustainable development, peace and security.

Accessibility and integration are fundamental rights of persons with disabilities, enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They are not only objectives, but also prerequisites for the enjoyment of other rights. The Convention urges States Parties to take appropriate measures to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to all aspects of society on an equal basis with others, and to identify and remove barriers and obstacles to accessibility.

In today’s dynamic world, this can also be difficult for people without disabilities. The existence of an unlimited society often presents many challenges. Denial of education, physical barriers in the environment and many other restrictions result in persons with disabilities feeling disenfranchised.

Evidence and experience show that when all barriers are removed, people with disabilities have the opportunity to participate fully in society, with tangible benefits.
